This project aims to address the severe decline in the pollination process that has occurred in the southwest of Europe over the last decade, mainly due to habitat destruction and the collapse of bee colonies as a result of pesticide use and climate change. This issue was particularly evident this past summer, with especially severe effects in the south of France.
This biodiversity loss process affects vast agricultural areas in the European Union, where various oilseed crops, such as sunflowers and rapeseed, must be pollinated by insects. The POLL-OLE-GI project seeks to promote and develop islands and strips of vegetation that provide floral resources for natural pollinator communities of these crops, including bees and other free-living insects, for as long as possible. Expected results include increased biodiversity in the agricultural environment of southwest Europe (SUDOE region), enhanced productivity of oilseed crops, and reduced pesticide contamination risks for honeybees, whose populations are declining in large areas of the SUDOE region.
This project is coordinated by Dr. Carlos Rad, Professor of Agro-Food Engineering and Rural Environment at the University of Burgos, with participants including members of the UBU Composting Research Group (UBUCOMP), the Autonomous University of Madrid’s Sociosystems Group, the Functional Ecology Center of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), the Chizé Biological Studies Center (France), part of the CNRS network, and the National Institute for Agricultural Research INRA-Poitou Charentes (France). The project is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of the Junta de Castilla y León, the Regional Union of Agro-food Cooperatives URCACYL, the Union of Farmers of Castilla y León UC-CL, various Local Action Groups in the province, and non-profit institutions such as the Oxígeno Foundation.
