Project Principal Investigators:
Sonia Martel, MSc
With an MSc in Forest Science, Master in Silvopasciculture and Master in Landscape Planning, she is the leader of the Sustainability research line at the “International Research Centre of Critical Raw Materials for Advanced Industrial Technologies” ICCRAM, University of Burgos. Within this area, she develops research tasks related to the definition of Circular Economy models, indicators, leading the Center strategy related to sustainability. Within ICCRAM, the sustainability area is well aligned with the nanosafety area, where ICCRAM has achieved a number of proposals funded during the last years, three of them coordinated by the institution: the recently finished MSCA-RISE-NANOGENTOOLS-2015, ICARUS – INAS (GA: 946174), and the recently awarded H2020-NMBP-TO-IND-2020-DIAGONAL (GA: 953152; Global budget: 6.340.223,75€), that will be started on May 2021, where she acts as project manager and also as research team member, leading the sustainability and circular economy approach across the project. In addition, she also led the Life Cycle Assessment activities within the recently finished projects NOVAMAG (GA: 686056) and ICARUS (GA: 713514), and shares the role of Principal Investigator with juan Antonio Tamayo-Ramos and Rocío Barros within the projects H2020-LIGHTME: "An Open Innovation Ecosystem for upscaling production processes of lightweight metal alloys composites", H2020-BIOMAC: “European Sustainable BIObased nanoMAterials Community”, H2020-NEFERTITI: “Innovative photocatalysts integrated in flow photoreactor systems for direct CO2 and H2O conversion into solar fuels” and H2020-WORLD: “Waste Oils RecycLe and Development”. She is part of the professoriate of the Circular Economy Master’s and currently also collaborating as external professor at the Structural Integrity Master.
Dr. Juan Antonio Tamayo-Ramos, PhD
Juan Antonio Tamayo-Ramos has PhD in Molecular Microbiology and is the scientific coordinator of the Nanotoxicology Laboratory at ICCRAM. His scientific career has been developed within three research institutions of excellence: IATA-CSIC, Spain (2003-2009), Wageningen University (WUR), The Netherlands (2009-2015), and ICCRAM-UBU, Spain (2016-). Currently, his main research activities are related to (i) toxicology of nanomaterials and emerging contaminants, (ii) development and application of “omics” technologies in toxicology and biotechnology, and (iii) biofunctionalization of novel materials for industry-oriented applications. The results of his investigations have resulted in: 29 publications in top life sciences journals (h-index=13, i-10 index=15, total citations=938), 2 patents, and participation in more than 20 R&D projects at national and international level. He has expertise in the coordination and supervision of Bsc, MSc, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, being the PI and Scientific Coordinator of H2020-MSCA-RISE NANOGENTOOLS as well as ESR supervisor in the H2020-ITN SOLUTION project. Juan A. Tamayo-Ramos also shares the rol of PI with Rocío Barros García and Sonia Martel Martín in the EU funded projects SURFBIO (GA: 952379), BIOMAC (GA: 952941), DIAGONAL (GA: 953152).
Rocío Barros, PhD
She has a degree in Biology and a PhD in Environmental Science and provides 10 years of experience in managing and coordinating European projects. She leads the ICCRAM-Environment and Sustainability Research Group at the University of Burgos, with about 20 researchers. Since 2005 she has been involved in more than 20 European projects (FP6, FP7 and H2020) mainly related to sustainability, circular economy, nanomaterials, environmental technologies and biotechnology. 2013-2016 she worked as a researcher in ACCIONA in the Materials Group of the R&D Technological Center. Part of the University of Burgos-ICCRAM since 2016, she works as a senior researcher and collaborates in several H2020 Project. She participated in the coordination team of the EU-H2020 MSCA-RISE NANOGENTOOLS and EU-FET-OPEN ICARUS. She has been the PI (at UBU level) the H2020-SC5 SCRREEN-Solutions for CRitical Raw materials. Currently she is the Project Coordinator of BIOTEC-GREENER Project “InteGRated systems for Effective ENvironmEntal Remediation''. She is part of the professoriate of the Circular Economy Master’s.
