University of North Florida - Eclipse

Doctor John Hewitt and a group of 12 students from UNF come to Burgos to observe the total solar eclipse on August 12th 2026.

Experience one of the most extraordinary astronomical events of the century from one of the best observation sites in Spain. This international summer course, organised by the University of Burgos, combines the observation of the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 with an engaging programme of cultural, scientific and outdoor activities.

Participants will discover the rich historical and natural heritage of Burgos while learning about astronomy, human evolution and the unique significance of the 2026 eclipse. The course offers an excellent opportunity to meet international students and academics in an interdisciplinary learning environment.

Programme highlights

• Observation of the Total Solar Eclipse from a privileged location near Sasamón, including a picnic and a night-time stargazing session.
• Guided tour of Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Spanish Gothic architecture.
• Visit to the Royal Monastery of Las Huelgas, one of Spain's most important medieval monasteries and former royal pantheon.
• Excursion to the Atapuerca Archaeological Sites, internationally recognised for their outstanding contribution to the study of human evolution.
• Guided visit to the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH), home to original fossils and discoveries from Atapuerca.
• Nature excursion to Valderejo Natural Park, including a trekking route through the Río Purón canyon and a visit to the medieval village of Frías.
• Guided walking tour of Burgos, exploring the city's historical centre and cultural heritage.
• Free time and social activities, allowing participants to experience Burgos, its gastronomy and local atmosphere.
