- Abstract and objectives: H2SCORE aims to demonstrate how integrated fuel cell and hydrogen technologies can strengthen renewable energy communities, improving decarbonisation, resilience and energy autonomy. Coordinated by Politecnico di Torino, the project will develop a modular and replicable system combining low-temperature technologies, including a PEM electrolyser, metal hydride storage and a PEM fuel cell, with a high-temperature reversible solid oxide cell supplied with syngas from local biomass.
The solution will be demonstrated in the existing Valsesia renewable energy community in Quarona, Italy. Integration with the local electricity grid and district heating network will enable sector coupling, supported by an advanced energy management system optimising electricity, heat, hydrogen and biomass. A portable hydrogen-powered fuel cell generator will also address temporary and mobile applications.
A twelve-month demonstration campaign at TRL7 will assess operation, pollutant emissions and hydrogen leakage. Cloud-based monitoring will track community performance indicators in real time and support stakeholder engagement.
The assessment framework combines technical, economic, environmental, regulatory, safety and social considerations. Four replication studies in Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Canada will examine different locations, user needs, regulatory conditions and grid-connected or off-grid settings. Bringing together fifteen partners, H2SCORE seeks to support wider deployment of hydrogen-enabled renewable energy communities across Europe and beyond the continent. - Web:
