Motivation and context:
Today´s society relies on energy storage on a day-to-day basis, e.g. match energy production and demand from renewable sources, power a variety of electronics, and enable emerging technologies. As both the electric vehicle and renewable energy penetrate in the market, a larger amount of batteries will be demanded. In fact, if projections are met in the Li-ion battery market “alone”, the global battery factory capacity would reach 1700 GWh per year by 2028, leading to a production capacity of 7 million tonnes of batteries a year. Despite LIBs possess a balanced solution regarding their key performance indicators, many aspects of LIBs must be improved from battery performances to efficient recycling process. Alternatively, innovative batteries, e.g. Metal-Air, Redox-Flow, Organic-based, etc must be pursued to develop new generation of batteries having non-incremental improvements for certain key performance indicators.
In this context, this joint research unit BATTERY2030 aims at gathering complementary experites to provide holistic solutions to the major challenges faced in the development of advanced batteries, bearing in mind the goal set by the European Commision in the European Green Deal, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the European Action plan on Batteries and the European SET-plan.
