Research Topics of European Interest
ICCRAM develops its scientific activity in alignment with some of the most pressing challenges identified at the European level, bringing together its research groups and expertise across complementary areas. A significant line of work is devoted to the study of pollutants in the environment, addressing their detection, behavior, and remediation to reduce risks to ecosystems and human health. In parallel, the Center advances methodologies for the toxicological evaluation of nanomaterials and emerging substances, ensuring the safe and responsible development of innovative technologies.
Sustainability is a transversal axis across ICCRAM’s research. The Center applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Sustainability Assessment tools to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic impacts of products and processes, providing scientific evidence to support greener innovation. These capabilities feed into projects focused on the Circular Economy, where ICCRAM contributes to the design of sustainable value chains, efficient use of resources, and strategies for recycling and reuse of critical raw materials.
Another key research focus is the design and computational modeling of advanced materials. Using state-of-the-art simulation tools and multiscale modeling approaches, ICCRAM researchers explore the properties, performance, and safety of new materials before their synthesis. This predictive capacity accelerates innovation, reduces costs, and supports the development of materials with tailored functionalities for applications in energy, environment, and industry.
In the field of energy, ICCRAM works on the development and optimization of batteries and electrochemical systems, exploring new materials, improving performance, and promoting safe, sustainable solutions for energy storage. These lines of research not only respond to the European Green Deal and Horizon Europe priorities but also position ICCRAM as a multidisciplinary actor capable of integrating advanced science with societal and industrial needs.

European & National Projects
The European research programmes for Research and Innovation aim at fostering research & technological development at European level, to build a knowledge economy and society. This implies principles of excellence and strong interactions between R&D and innovation.
ICCRAM is a major partner in several European projects with participation in H2020 and Horizon Europe projects and several International Actions in the framework of COST, EERA, and ITER. ICCRAM has been the coordinator of 3 H2020 European Projects in the Excellence Science program (FET-OPEN and Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions). Additionally, ICCRAM also takes part in regional activities related to its expertise.
