Description
LIFE+ WOGAnMBR (Demonstration of Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor technology for valorization of agro-food industry wastewater. LIFE13 ENV/ES/000779) project approaches the problem of industrial water with high concentrations of complex organic matter, often generated by food and beverages industries, which are currently treated by conventional processes that generate a large amount of sludge and have a high energy consumption.
LIFE + WOGAnMBR is focused on the problem of oils and fats for being a very important source of organic matter with difficult degradation that are generally removed by pre-processing operations that require chemical reagents and generate sludge, wasting its high potential for biogas production.
The project aims to demonstrate the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of an innovative AnMBR bioreactor with minimal sludge production and energy self-sufficient.
The project main objective is to develop and demonstrate the use of AnMBR membranes for the treatment and recovery of food industry complex wastewater. This will be achieved through the development of AnMBR anaerobic membrane bioreactors as an emerging technology for sustainable wastewater treatment in the food sector; and by building a pilot plant, to allow its implementation in the food industry sector.
The project is led by the industrial and environmental biotechnology group (BIOIND) of Universidad de Burgos. The consortium is complemented by the companies Eurofrits and PepsiCo A.I.E., located in Burgos and Centro Tecnológico del agua (CETaqua) based in Barcelona and Federación Española de Industrias de la Alimentación y Bebidas (FIAB) based in Madrid.
